Cook County and Grand Portage residents woke up to much-needed snow on the ground Sunday morning. While it wasn't the predicted 8" to 12" many hoped for, most areas received at least 2".

According to the National Weather Service, the forecasted winter storm didn't manifest as initially thought due to the convergence band (in simplest terms, the point where two air masses collide, resulting in an upward air motion and precipitation) setting up over Lake Superior instead of inland.

Many welcomed the snow, even if some were disappointed in the total amounts received. Earlier this month, the Gunflint Mail Run and the John Beargrease Dog Sled Race were rescheduled due to the lack of snow along trails. There is a small chance for more snow mid-week, but it's still too soon to determine amounts. Otherwise, it looks to be cold and windy for most of the week ahead.

Snowfall totals as of Sunday morning, with the higher reports coming from locations closer to shore:
  • Grand Marais: 2"-4"
  • Lutsen: 2"-4"
  • Sea Gull Lake: 1.5"-3"
  • Hovland: 2"-3"
  • Tofte: 2"-2.5"
