2025 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon Postponed to March 2 Due to Unsafe Trail Conditions
Jan 02, 2025 05:12PM ● By EditorThe Board of Directors of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon has announced that the 2025 race will be postponed to March 2, 2025, due to unsafe trail conditions. Recent assessments revealed insufficient snow and icy terrain along the 300-mile course, creating hazardous conditions for sled dogs and mushers.
“Safety is our number one priority,” said Mike Keyport, President of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon Board. “After thoroughly evaluating the trail and exploring alternate routes, we determined that postponing the race is the best option to ensure the safety and well-being of the dogs, mushers, and everyone involved.”
This marks the second consecutive year the race has been impacted by weather. “Postponing the race is never an easy decision, especially following last year’s postponement of the 40th-anniversary running due to similar weather challenges,” Keyport added. “We are heartbroken that, once again, weather—a factor entirely out of our control—has impacted our plans. However, the safety of the dogs and mushers remains our unwavering priority, and we are determined to ensure that the rescheduled race continues to honor the spirit and legacy of the Beargrease.”
The marathon, originally scheduled for late January, has been rescheduled to allow for improved conditions as additional snowfall is anticipated later this season. The decision was not made lightly, and organizers expressed gratitude for the understanding and support of sponsors, participants, volunteers, and fans.
“We are optimistic that by moving the race to March 2, we will be able to host an event that upholds the tradition and standards of the Beargrease,” Keyport said. “We are grateful to the mushers, sponsors, and volunteers for their flexibility and dedication to this incredible event.”
The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, a qualifier for the Iditarod, has long been a hallmark of the sled dog racing community, celebrating the spirit and endurance of mushers and their teams. Despite this temporary setback, the Beargrease team remains committed to delivering an exceptional event this March.
