Grand Portage National Monument is temporarily closing the Fort Charlotte Campground effective immediately due to high fire danger and active wildfires across northeast Minnesota. This proactive closure is being issued to protect the safety and well-being of visitors, staff, and nearby communities as wildfire activity continues to create unpredictable and hazardous conditions.

The closure will remain in place until fire danger decreases and conditions allow for safe reopening.

Grand Portage National Monument appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this temporary closure. Protecting visitors and preserving park resources remain our highest priorities.

Grand Portage National Monument is a fee-free site co-managed with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and was established to preserve a vital center of fur trade activity and Anishinaabeg Ojibwe Heritage.
