If you are looking to lend your voice to a group of community singers on Wednesday evenings, look no further than right here in Grand Marais!
Local community member, Ann Russ, has led a variety of song circles over the past sixty years in homes, camps, and public places. Ann believes that singing together is all about building community and understanding the richness that comes from many voices.
This particular Wednesday night gathering was initiated by Enno Limvere, Pastor at First Congregation United Church of Christ, shortly after he arrived in Grand Marais in 2020. The group meets Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. at the Congo church and sings from the “Rise Up Singing” and “Rise Again” songbooks (over two thousand songs with lyrics and chords). Extra copies are available, or people can bring their own books or other songs to share.
Accompaniment is with guitar, mandolin, and sometimes hand drum.
If the weather cooperates the group sings outdoors, otherwise they make their circle in the church entryway. Ages from those participating have ranged from babies to 93 years young.
There are typically under a dozen voices joining this song circle on Wednesdays, with folks coming and going as their lives permit. Smiles and harmony are always in abundance!
