As prom night approaches, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging students, parents, and community members to help make this year’s celebrations fun, memorable, and safe. High school prom is a time to celebrate, especially for seniors- usually the last big event before graduation. We want to remind students and parents that safety is an important part of your plan for the evening.
We encourage students to make responsible decisions– before and after prom. The following precautions can make all the difference:
- Keep distractions to a minimum- Don’t text, take photos or check social media while behind the wheel.
- Seat belts save lives- use them!
- Slow down- Follow the speed limit and drive carefully. Being late is better than not making it at all.
- Never drive while impaired- If you or someone else is under the influence of any substance, don’t drive. Make a plan for a sober ride home.
- Plan ahead- Prom and the parties after can go very late. If you are tired, don’t drive and stay with a friend or have a parent pick you up.
- Look out for one another- If something feels off, speak up. Friends don’t let friends take risks.
Parents- Have these conversations before prom so everyone is on the same page. Check in with your teen, know their plans, and make sure they have a safe way to get home. Be available in case plans change.
Prom is a wonderful ending to the school year. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office would like everyone to have a fun and safe evening. Let’s work together to ensure that every young person in our community can celebrate responsibly and return home safely.
