Can you tell us a bit about how you started your career in the insurance business?
Thank you for the opportunity to share a bit about my journey. I actually began my professional career with a 20-year tenure in grocery retail. When our youngest son was born, I decided to ‘retire’ from that chapter of my life to spend more time at home with my family. During that period, I connected with a mentor who was already established in the insurance industry. She offered me a chance to explore how I could help families protect their assets and build their legacy. This experience truly opened my eyes to the meaningful impact that a dedicated insurance professional can have on the communities we serve. For me, it became more than just a career—it was about living a life with purpose by making a positive difference in people’s lives.
Prices are skyrocketing everywhere right now and everyone is looking for a way to save on expenses. Why are insurance rates increasing so much over the past few years?
Prices are skyrocketing everywhere right now, and many people are understandably looking for ways to save on their expenses, including insurance. Over the past few years, insurance rates have increased significantly due to several factors. One of the main reasons is the sharp rise in lawsuits related to auto accidents, which leads to higher claim costs. Additionally, labor expenses and the cost of vehicle parts have gone up, contributing to the overall increase in auto insurance premiums.
On the bright side, State Farm has actually decreased their auto rates recently, which is a great example of the benefits of being insured with a mutual company.
For homeowners insurance in Minnesota, the weather has played a big role in premium increases. In the last five years, Minnesota has experienced some of the most severe and catastrophic weather events in its history, resulting in a surge of homeowner claims.
What are some things that people can do right now to save on higher insurance costs, both with their home and auto?
- Work with a professional agent. Insurance is often misunderstood as a “one size fits all” product, but that’s a myth. While it’s easy to start a policy online, having a licensed, educated insurance professional on your side makes a big difference. Agents understand the nuances of coverage options and can tailor a policy to fit your unique needs, ensuring you’re neither underinsured nor overpaying.
- Review your coverages as your life changes. Major life events—like buying a home, getting married, or retiring—can impact your insurance needs. Regularly reviewing your policies with your agent helps make sure your coverage aligns with your current situation and goals.
- Communicate your priorities clearly to your agent. Let your agent know which coverages are most important to you. This helps avoid paying for unnecessary coverage and allows your agent to recommend options that provide the best value for your money.
This helps you better manage your insurance costs and make sure your coverage works effectively for you.
When you are not busy working, what hobbies do you enjoy?
When I’m not busy working, my favorite way to spend time is with my family. We really enjoy doing outdoor activities together—it’s a great way to connect and recharge. I’m also pursuing my private pilot license, so I try to get up in the air and fly as often as I can, which is both challenging and exhilarating. Additionally, I’m working on completing my CHFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) designation to deepen my knowledge and be able to help more people with their financial and insurance needs.
What is your favorite part about living and working along the North Shore?
My favorite part about living and working along the North Shore is meeting people and making meaningful connections. The community here is truly special, and my team and I feel honored to serve and support our North Shore neighbors. Building relationships and being a trusted resource for the families and businesses in this beautiful area is incredibly rewarding.
