The Minnesota Department of Transportation is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, Feb. 26, to discuss future planning for Highway 61 between Little Marais and Tofte. According to an MnDOT release, the event will take place at the Schroeder Town Hall (124 Cramer Road), starting at 5:30 p.m. with a brief presentation scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
The study area includes approximately 18 miles of the North Shore in Lake and Cook Counties, stretching from 2.6 miles north of Little Marais Road to 0.2 miles north of Leveaux Ridge Road. MnDOT states that the primary purpose of this study is to establish a common vision for the route while improving safety and efficiency for all users. This process involves identifying community needs, evaluating improvement alternatives, and documenting concerns at various pull-offs, waysides, and roadway curves near the county line.
MnDOT is also planning a separate pavement preservation project scheduled for 2027. This upcoming construction is intended to provide a smoother road surface, upgrade guardrails, and implement ADA improvements in the interim. The current study aims to provide further recommendations to increase safety for both motorized and non-motorized travel into the future.
Project team members will be available during the February meeting to hear feedback and answer questions regarding how the corridor is used today.
Individuals may request an ASL or foreign language interpreter by calling 651-366-4720 or seek other reasonable accommodations through the Minnesota Relay Service or by emailing the department’s ADA request address.
Further details regarding the study and the 2027 resurfacing project are available on the official MnDOT project website.
