I always cringe when I hear that a polar vortex is coming. It’s those arctic blasts though that create the most beautiful ice sculptures along Lake Superior’s shoreline.

After the wind died down the Grand Marais Harbor froze over with the smoothest ice I have seen this year. After taking this photo I started to skip rocks across the ice. With minimal friction they kept gliding until they are well out of sight. I haven’t found a word yet that can describe the spellbinding sounds small rocks make as they sing across smooth ice. It’s addictive just listening to it.
