The Grand Marais Film Society is getting ready for its next screening this Saturday, Feb. 7th, at 7 pm at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. The film, released in 2025, has been nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and features an all-star cast, “successive battles,” and revolutionaries.
“This film feels especially timely,” shared Film Society Board Member, Lynnea Morse, “but it’s one we’ve been excited to show since it came out late last fall. With what’s happening now in our state, the board recognized that this was an opportunity for the organization to raise support for the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund, and thought this would also be a way to bring our own community together.”
One critic writing for The New York Times called the film "a carnivalesque epic about good and evil, violence and power, inalienable rights and the fight against injustice; it's also a love story. The film speaks to the failures of the past and of the present but insists on the promise of the future." Another critic, Asia Frey, called it “...easily the best film of 2025. Everything I heard about how good it is did not even go far enough — it was thrilling, compelling, hilarious, enraging, uplifting, stunning.”
Additionally, the Film Society board released the following statement on their social media page late last week:
"The Grand Marais Film Society also expresses our deep appreciation and solidarity with all of those working to protect the rights, lives, and livelihoods of friends, neighbors, and strangers in the Twin Cities and across our state. We might be a little local nonprofit, but we believe every individual and organization has opportunities to take action, and we want to do our part."
100% of funds raised from screening this week's movie will be donated to the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund of the Women's Foundation of Minnesota to support the defense of immigrants' legal rights, responding to requests for basic needs, and organizing and mobilization efforts. Every dollar collected for tickets, concessions, and donations will be passed along to support this critical work. Our hope is to raise at least $1,000 to aid their work.
You can purchase tickets and learn more about the film on the Grand Marais Film Society’s ticketing page - (Trailer and Tickets)
Doors for the event will open at 6:30. Tickets are $5. The film runs 161 minutes and is rated R.
