Fika Coffee has opened a new roastery in Cook County, marking a long-planned step toward creating a permanent home for the roasting side of the business. While the move may feel recent, the idea has been taking shape for years. The roaster itself has already lived several lives—first in a small shed near the Gunflint Trail, then in Lutsen, and now in its new location—each move driven by growth and the need for more space.
As the business expanded, the limitations of operating out of a small footprint became clear. The new roastery is designed first and foremost as a production space, where coffee can be roasted, packaged, boxed, and shipped efficiently for retail and wholesale. But production is only part of the story. For Fika, having a home also means creating a place where people are welcome.
Plans for the space likely include roastery tours, seasonal ticketed visits, and educational offerings like home-brewing and other kinds of classes. The team is also exploring low-key pop-ups—simple, focused coffee service announced on social media—designed to keep things flexible and personal rather than menu-driven.
Another idea under discussion is a local coffee can or subscription program, inspired by Fika’s early days delivering coffee to locals door-to-door around the county. The goal is to create an affordable, community-focused option that brings locals into the roastery regularly, while being mindful of work schedules and accessibility beyond standard daytime hours.
The word fika—pronounced as “fee-kah”—comes from Swedish culture and refers both to a coffee break and the act of gathering. For Fika Coffee, the meaning goes beyond the cup. It reflects the relationships behind coffee, from farmers and producers to customers and neighbors, and the way coffee naturally brings people together across all walks of life.
The new roastery is tucked into a corner of the Grand Marais business park, with direct access to hiking, biking, skiing, and snowmobile trails. That setting reflects the three ideas that continue to guide Fika: coffee, community, and adventure. The space is intended to be both a gathering place and a starting point—somewhere to pause, connect, and then head back out into the woods. Public hours of operation will be announced once determined.
An open house and ribbon cutting will introduce the space to the community this Friday, 2/6, at 11 am, with a larger grand opening planned for the summer. While some finishing touches are still underway, the doors are open, and the intent is clear: this roastery isn’t just a facility—it’s home.
