Cook County recently transitioned to the Beacon property information and tax payment system, a modern and secure platform that improves how residents access property records and pay property taxes online.

Beacon is a web-based system widely used by counties throughout Minnesota. It brings property data, tax information, and mapping tools together in one integrated platform that can be accessed by both the public and County staff. Through Beacon, residents are able to view property details, assessment information, maps, tax history, and make tax payments- all in one easy-to-use online portal.

One of the primary benefits of the new system is improved public access. Beacon is designed with a user-friendly interface that makes it easier for property owners, real estate professionals, and other users to find accurate, up-to-date information without needing to contact County offices for routine questions.

The system also improves efficiency and accuracy behind the scenes. By reducing manual data entry and reconciliation between departments, Beacon helps ensure that property and tax information remains consistent and current across County systems. This supports timely updates and reduces the potential for errors.

Beacon strengthens collaboration across multiple County departments, including the Assessor, Recorder, Auditor/Treasurer, Land Services, and MIS. Sharing data through a single system allows staff to work more effectively and coordinate workflows that previously relied on separate tools or processes.

From a technology and security standpoint, the transition reduces the County’s reliance on aging infrastructure and servers physically located in County buildings. Because Beacon is securely hosted in the cloud, it lowers ongoing maintenance demands and reduces cybersecurity risks, while ensuring the system remains supported and updated.

The cost of the Beacon system is fully funded through existing Recorder’s Office technology fees and does not require a new tax levy or any additional burden on taxpayers. Updated links and additional information can be found on the County website. Residents with questions about the transition are encouraged to contact County offices for assistance.
