Across Minnesota and the United States, the past weekend was marked by a series of organized protests, rallies, and vigils following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. In Grand Marais, community members and visitors participated in two separate events to address the incident and its impact on the community. On Saturday, over 100 people took part in a rally organized by the local organization Arrowhead Indivisible, under the theme "ICE Out for Good." Participants lined up along Highway 61 near the intersection of Wisconsin Street, carrying signs and chanting in support of immigrant neighbors to honor Renee Nicole Good and to demand that ICE leave the state.

The weekend’s activities in Grand Marais continued on Sunday evening with a Prayer Vigil for Peace, held at the Grand Marais Harbor. Despite the wintry weather, between 45 and 50 people attended the event, which was led by local clergy. Pastor Enno Limvere of First Congressional United Church of Christ was joined by Pastor Peggy Schnack from Spirit of the Wilderness and Pastor Calvin Konop from Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The clergy led the group in prayer and the singing of "This Little Light of Mine." The vigil focused on spreading a message of peace and community support for those in Minneapolis and across the state as tensions remain high following the shooting.

Throughout the rest of Minnesota, rallies and vigils took place on Saturday or Sunday. In South Minneapolis, thousands of people—with some estimates exceeding 5,000—gathered to march near the site of the shooting. Similar gatherings were reported in Grand Rapids, where over 300 people assembled, and Duluth, where hundreds of participants took to the streets. According to the organization Indivisible, these gatherings were part of a coordinated effort that included 1,200 rallies and vigils across all 50 states over a two-day period.
