Cook County Youth Winter Break Community Connections Scavenger Hunt

This winter break, families are invited to encourage their middle and high-school-aged youth to take part in a Community Connections Scavenger Hunt, a fun and meaningful way for young people to connect with their community, share their ideas, and feel supported.
The activity was inspired by youth input. When asked what they wanted to do over the break, many suggested a scavenger hunt—something interactive, social, and community-focused. Using these ideas, the Youth Prevention Coordinator with the Cook County Public Health Team organized the activity to reflect youth interests and promote engagement.
The scavenger hunt will take place from December 26 through January 3. During this time, youth will visit or call nine local businesses. They are encouraged to either visit the businesses or contact them by phone if they are too far to visit. At each stop, they will have a brief conversation with an adult using a prompt question and receive a word. After completing all stops, youth will use the collected words to decode a secret message. These conversations help youth share what matters to them and learn how adults in the community support health, safety, belonging, and well-being
To add creativity and connection during the break, several free hands-on activities are also being offered:
Art & Craft Classes at Studio 21 on December 26 and 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., where youth will make origami figurines and magnets (they are welcome and encouraged to bring an image or picture that they would like on a magnet)
Handmade Game Pop-Up Class facilitated by North House Folk School on January 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The scavenger hunt will wrap up with a celebration and reflection gathering on January 8 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at North Point. Youth will enjoy food, share what they learned from their conversations, reflect on their experiences, and help shape ideas for future activities. Prizes will be given for participation and completion.
This activity centers on youth voice, builds community connections, and supports youth well-being during winter break, based on youth ideas. If you would like to help create and participate in more events like this, we invite you to join a youth-led group focused on promoting safety, connection, and well-being in the community. For more information, contact Rocio Rivas at 218-264-9236 or at [email protected]., and for the Youth Scavenger Hunt document, scan the QR code, or click here.
