Earlier this week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an ongoing, large-scale voluntary recall of shredded cheese manufactured by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc., based in Ohio. The recall was issued due to the potential presence of metal fragments in a supplier's raw materials, which include shredded cheese distributed across 31 states, including Minnesota. The recall covers "more than 260,000 cases of shredded cheese," according to the Associated Press.

The FDA stated that ingesting metal fragments "may cause injuries such as dental damage, laceration of the mouth or throat, or laceration or perforation of the intestine." No illnesses or injuries have been reported related to this recall so far, but consumers are urged to check their refrigerators immediately for any cheese included in the recall.
The recalled products primarily consist of shredded mozzarella and Italian-style cheese blends, which, as the Associated Press reported, were sold "under private store-brand labels at several retailers, including Target, Walmart, and Aldi," and include brands such as Good & Gather (Target), Great Value (Walmart), Happy Farms (Aldi), Lucerne Dairy Farms (Cub), and Sprouts Farmers Market. The affected cheese has sell-by dates ranging from January 2026 to March 2026.Consumers in Minnesota who have purchased shredded cheese should immediately check their packages against the full recall list published on the FDA’s website. If the product matches the recalled items, you must not consume it. Consumers are advised to either dispose of the affected product immediately or return it to the point of purchase (retail store) for a full refund.
