Bryce Campbell, owner of the Lutsen Resort, has been arrested in connection to the fire that destroyed the historic structure on February 6, 2024.
Campbell was arrested in Michigan on December 3, and has been charged with first degree arson and insurance fraud. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension shared in a release that a press conference will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, officially announcing the charges and arrest.
The arrest warrant was not released publicly, as there was a concern of the potential suspect to "flee, hide, or otherwise prevent the execution of the arrest warrant," according to court documents.
According to court documents, Campbell is charged with the following counts:
Count 2: Arson-1st Degree-Building-Knows Person is Present
Count 3: Arson-1st Degree-Building-Possibility Person Present
Count 4: Insurance Fraud-Present False Representation/Conceals Facts-Claim for Payment, regarding a claim exceeding $35,000
The legal prosecution for this case will be led by Cook County Attorney Jeanne Peterson. The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Cook County Attorney's Office, the State Fire Marshal Division, and other partner agencies.
Regarding penalties, each count of arson carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and/or fines that may reach up to $35,000. The separate charge of insurance fraud also has a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, in addition to a potential fine of up to $100,000, or both
