The National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth has released snow totals as of 10 a.m. this morning. The higher totals were generally recorded in the middle of the county, while the lower amounts came from the northern portion and near Lake Superior.

According to the NWS, snow will continue to taper off and end in NE Minnesota throughout the day. Up to two additional inches of snow are possible. The Winter Storm Warning for Cook and Lake County has been downgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory, which is in effect until 6 p.m. this evening. Winds are still expected to be gusty, which may cause snow to cross roadways, reduce visibility, or create slippery conditions.

The storm has brought high wind gusts to the area. The highest recorded gust as of 8 a.m. this morning, according to the NWS, was 57 mph in Grand Portage. The Bay of Grand Marais also experienced a high peak gust of 51 mph, and a gust of 44 mph was reported in Schroeder.

Currently, roads are improving, with MnDOT reporting some normal driving conditions along Highway 61, mainly between Two Harbors and Silver Bay. Other stretches of 61 continue to be lightly covered with snow, or compacted with snow and icy. MnDOT reports that Highway 1 is lightly covered with snow.

Drivers are encouraged to allow plenty of time to reach their destination. For the most up-to-date road conditions in Minnesota, visit MnDOT at 511mn.org.

  • Tofte: 6.1"
  • Hovland: 4.5" - 6.0"
