From the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - November 25, 2025
The transition from fall into winter is a busy and beautiful time in our state forests and other DNR-managed lands. Many people are getting outdoors to hike, hunt, camp, and forage for some seasonal species. With so many Minnesotans enjoying these lands in different ways, it’s a great moment to talk about how foraging fits into the broader outdoor experience – and your input is important! The Minnesota Sustainable Foraging Task Force (Minnesota Laws 2025, 1st Special Session, Chapter 1, Article 4, Section 24) is designed to gather and review applicable information and develop recommendations to the legislature for foraging (mushrooms, berries, and plants) on DNR-managed lands. The Foraging Task Force has held five hybrid meetings to date and is scheduled to conclude their meetings in mid-February 2026 and submit a written report with findings and recommendations to the legislature and commissioner of natural resources by Feb. 28, 2026. Right now, the Task Force is seeking public input on:
The Task Force would like to hear from you during a 90-minute public listening session. If you forage, are passionate about the management of outdoor recreation on state lands, or are interested in being part of the conversation, please consider joining one of the following public input sessions (a Zoom link will be provided 3 days in advance on the website).
If you would like to provide testimony to the Task Force, please email [email protected] no later than 12/2/2025. Please note that testimony may be limited to 3 minutes to ensure time for all interested testifiers. Please visit the DNR website for information on the current rules regarding foraging when visiting our State Parks and State Recreation Areas and State Forests! Updated 11/26 to include a newly announced additional session to provide public feedback. |
