The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has scheduled additional prescribed pile burning operations to be conducted by firefighters from the Gunflint and Tofte Ranger Stations of the Superior National Forest. The locations include the East Bearskin Lake area (Bearskin Campground and Bearskin Lodge), announced earlier this month, as well as around Hungry Jack Lake, Menogyn, and Squint Lake, most recently announced.

The USFS conducted prescribed burns around East Bearskin Lake on November 18 through 20, 2025, and plans to do so on November 25 through 26, 2025.

Most recently, the USFS issued another notice regarding prescribed burns around Hungry Jack Lake, Menogyn, and Squint Lake, scheduled for November 24 to December 5. The goal for these burns remains the same as for East Bearskin Lake: to reduce vegetation debris piles.

For all prescribed burns, specific weather and environmental conditions must be met. Fire staff require cooler, damper weather to ensure fire spread, or "creep," is minimal, while the debris piles themselves must be dry enough to fully consume. For smaller and medium-sized machine piles, higher humidity or a forecast for upcoming precipitation is preferred. The USFS consults daily with the National Weather Service in Duluth to guarantee that all forecasts align with these burning conditions.

Signage will be posted along all adjacent roadways and at entry points to burn areas accessible by ATV or foot. Significant smoke impacts of short duration are to be expected in certain locations during the ignition period.

Following the initial ignition, residual light smoke, smoldering, and slow-moving surface fire spread are anticipated for a few days. Firefighters and wildland engines will be present on-site during ignitions and will patrol the burn areas whenever fire spread is possible. The public may not see continuous firefighter presence, but know that patrols are being conducted. Fire will generally be allowed to burn within the designated project boundary if there is no threat to surrounding areas.

If there is fire or smoke in any area where it is not expected, contact the Forest Service immediately at the Gunflint Office at 218-387-1750 or the Tofte Office at 218-663-8060.
