From the Grand Marais Public Library - June 13, 2025
The Grand Marais Public Library is excited to host North Shore poet Shelley Getten as a guest facilitator for its monthly poetry workshop on June 25, from 6-8 PM.
Getten is the author of the poetry collection, Of Cows and Crows (Nodin Press, 2024). She will teach how a poem moves from beginning to end, and as a group, participants will explore several narrative poems and discuss aspects that help the flow and twists of the work. Shelley will also provide insights into which devices and techniques poets can use in their own poems to achieve successful movement through the poem. Getten will also offer ideas and prompts for in-class writing time. Reading and discussion of participants’ poems will close out the evening.
Born in St. Cloud and raised on a farm in central Minnesota, Getten composes poetry full of simple wisdom and experience, both profound and relatable to a wide audience. Her approach is interdisciplinary: Like a modern day William Blake, Getten often accompanies her poetry with hand-printed linoleum-block images. She offers classes in both poetry and printmaking all along the North Shore. Visit her website www.gettencreative.com to learn more.
Hosted by the Cook County SCRAP Society, this workshop is free and open to the public, with no registration required. Address any questions about the workshop to [email protected].
More poetry workshops are scheduled throughout the year, including July’s, which will feature haiku poet and award-winning children’s book author Sandra Hisakuni on July 19, at 10:30 AM. Have questions? Call the library at 218-387-1140 or visit us on the web: grandmaraislibrary.org.
