Two Cook County Girl Scouts are giving back and making a difference for shelter dogs and cats. Lily and Holly Belmore, Troop 4112 in Grand Marais, Minnesota, are currently both working on achieving one of the highest awards in Girl Scouting: The Bronze Award.
The Bronze Award is for Junior Girl Scouts in 4th or 5th Grade and is the highest award this age group can receive. A lot of work goes into the Bronze Award, including volunteering at least 20 individual hours and impacting the community in some way. Lily and Holly both decided to help dogs and cats in shelters because "they're cute," as Holly says, and because shelters "help cats and dogs have a home and not live on the streets, and not have dogs and cats put down," as Lily answered.
As part of the project, the girls have made "pet bags" using their creative skills and tools, such as the Cricut, which can create personally designed decals, stickers, iron-on appliques, and more. The girls not only design the bags, but fill them with "things like a brush, treats, a toy, a handmade fleece blanket (that the girls sewed), and a brochure that informs people how to care for their pet and why people should spay or neuter their pet," Heather Belmore, the girl's mom said. Once finished, the bags are donated to the Lake County Humane Society.
When asked what they had enjoyed most about the process, Holly responded that she really enjoyed going to the shelter to see the cats and dogs.
Lily gave some advice for other girls who are interested in doing a similar project: "Never give up; keep on trying."
The Belmores encourage anyone interested in adopting or making a donation to contact their local animal shelter (for Lake and Cook County, see below).

The pet bags are personalized by Lily and Holly, and contain items needed for families looking to adopt a pet.
