March 10, 2023 – Incident #230302224. The Cook County Attorney’s Office charged Levi William Axtell of Grand Marais (28) on March 10, 2023, with the crime of Second-Degree Murder (intentional) after Cook County Sheriff’s Office arrested Axtell on March 8, 2023, related to the death of 77-year-old Lawrence Scully (Grand Marais).

Axtell was arraigned via Zoom on the day he was charged, and bail was set in the amount of one million dollars. Pending his next appearance April 10, 2023, Axtell will be held in the custody of the Cook County Sheriff.

Axtell entered Scully’s residence located at 1109 East 5th Street and assaulted him with a shovel. Scully sustained injuries to his head which resulted in death. The investigation is being led by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
