Northwoods Neighbors: A Newcomer's Guide to Land Stewardship
Welcome to the Neighbor-Woods!
Welcome to the neighbor-woods! If you’ve recently moved to Cook County, you’ve likely realized that you’ve got a lot to learn about this unique landscape. Whether you’re curious about the tracks in your backyard, how to grow a tomato in these cold rocky soils, or the best way to manage your forest, this six-week immersive series is designed for you. Join a cohort of fellow landowners to transition from "newcomer" to "steward." Through an ecological lens, we’ll help you develop your relationship to your land. What You’ll Learn Flora & Fauna: Tree identification and coexisting with local wildlife. Protect the lake you love: Master practical septic care and learn how your property impacts our local water. Cold-Climate Yard and Garden: Growing a thriving yard and garden in our unique soil and zone. Resource Mapping: Connecting with the local experts and tools you need to keep growing. The Experience Forget the lecture hall. Each week features hands-on activities and outdoor field experiences that get you out on the land. Plus, you’ll meet local natural resource professionals—the "people in the know"—who are here to support your journey long after the class ends.
Dates Tuesdays 1-4 p.m. July 14, 21, 28; August 4, 18, 25 Note: there will not be class on August 11.
