A standoff in Duluth's Piedmont Heights neighborhood is over after lasting nearly eight hours Thursday.

The suspect, a 30-year-old Duluth man with multiple felony warrants, was removed from his home by law enforcement on scene.

According to police, the incident began at about 1:00 p.m. when a person wanted on "significant" charges barricaded himself inside his home on the 2200 block of West Nanticoke Street. Police tried to arrest him, but he ran into his house, where he remained for nearly eight hours.

During this time, portions of Nanticoke Street and West 26th Street were closed and the public was asked to stay away.

At approximately 4:30pm, the Duluth Tactical Response Team arrived on the scene and used chemical munitions to attempt to gain the cooperation and surrender of the individual.  Armored vehicles were also brought to the scene to provide safety for officers by the City of Superior and St. Louis County.

Ultimately, law enfocement was able to make entry into the home and the suspect was arrested.

"After at least three to four hours of negotiation with the suspect, he refused to cooperate and come out so we called in our tactical response team to deal with him. Eventually, he forced us to make entry and he was arrested inside," Lieutenant Tim Jazdzewski with the Duluth Police Department said.

Police say that the suspect has a number of active warrants, including warrants for Intensive Supervisor Release/violation probation for 1st degree, Criminal Sexual Conduct, 1st Degree DWI, and 1st Degree Domestic Assault.

Additionally, police say the suspect has pending criminal cases for three different 1st Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, Felony Domestic Assault by Strangulation, and Misdemeanor Domestic Assault.

During the ongoing standoff, WDIO spoke with a parent who's child is enrolled in a daycare in the neighborhood about what it was like being separated in that stressful moment.

"Our provider sent a message to my wife and I and let us know that there was a situation... And as a parent, you get that rush of fear," Derrick of Duluth said. "Anxiousness was that first feeling, you know, what's going on? My child is locked in this house because of all the police there, but that's all the information we had."

Fortunately, Derrick was able to pick up his son from the daycare home before the tactical teams moved in and fortunately, the incident was resolved "safely and successfully" as officers hoped.

According to police, the suspect was taken to a hospital Thursday night to be checked out, but from there, he will be taken to the St. Louis County Jail.
