Airport Pit Brush Disposal Site Closure

From Cook County - July 9, 2026

Cook County has closed the Airport Pit Brush Disposal Site near Devil Track Lake due to a fire at the site.  This location is also known as the Ball Club Pit and is located at 224 Ball Club Rd.

On July 4 a fire broke out at the Airport Firewise Brush Pit. The Maple Hill and Grand Marais Fire Departments responded and the USFS and Mn DNR were also on scene for a period of time. After the flames were put out, the pile is continuing to smolder– and may do so for quite some time. The pit is being watched from the air, and is also being checked by our Firewise Coordinator, Sheriff’s Office, Highway Department, & other partners. We are exploring other options for disposal sites until it is safe to reopen the Airport Pit Site.

At the current time, the nearest other options for Firewise brush disposal sites are:

  • Pike Lake Pit-156 Cascade Bluffs Rd
  • Caribou Lake Pit-1139 Caribou Trail
  • East Bearskin Pit-33 E Bearskin Rd

We are planning to reopen the Airport Pit as soon as it is safe to do so, but it will likely be closed until winter. Thank you for your cooperation.
