It is that time of year again when the male ruffed grouse are declaring to other males that this is their territory and calling to any females in the area. They do this by what is called drumming. Their wings don’t strike anything. The sound comes from an implosion of air as it enters the pocket created by the upstroke of their wings. When another male enters their territory or a female answers their call they go into full display.

I currently have three drumming grouse that I have been keeping track of along the Northshore. It is so calming for me to spend time in the woods watching and listening to not only the grouse but all the birds migrating through or building their nests.

When you are out and about hiking this week listen for the sounds of the drumming ruffed grouse.
