From the Superior National Forest - April 28, 2026

The Superior National Forest will temporarily close two sections of National Forest System roads for public and contractor safety while construction projects occur. Additionally, other road projects will cause intermittent delays while culverts are replaced, and ditch work is completed.

What’s Planned

Two-week temporary closures

  • Forest Road 304–Kimball Creek Road on the Gunflint Ranger District will have a new large culvert installed. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer and the complete closure will last approximately two weeks. No recreation sites are impacted from the closure.
  • Forest Road 459–Grassy Lake Road on the Kawishiwi Ranger District is scheduled to have a large culvert replaced, beginning in October 2026. Access to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Mudro Lake entry point from this roadway will be impacted. The temporary closure is planned for two weeks with intermittent closures outside of that period. Pre-notification project letters were sent to property owners this winter. Two alternative routes are identified on the project map. Permit holders planning to exit at Mudro Lake after September 30, 2026, will receive an email regarding alternative parking options.
Intermittent closures
  • Forest Road 152–South Brule River on the Gunflint Ranger District is scheduled for work to replace an aging bridge with a new one. The project will begin in the spring and continue into the fall. A temporary bypass is planned to help travelers move around the construction area. No recreation sites are affected.
