Minnesota is known for the intensity of our weather, but a warming world is increasingly amplifying many of our extremes. To help Cook County residents navigate these changing conditions, the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership, part of UMN Extension, is proud to announce its new StormWise Minnesota workshop in Grand Marais on May 13.

StormWise Minnesota is a new Extension program focused on weather and climate response and preparedness. These hands-on workshops are designed for communities across the state to move beyond awareness and into active preparation.

Participants in the Grand Marais workshop will learn about local current and emerging weather and climate risks, build their skills in emergency response, learn how to build an emergency preparedness kit, and develop tailored emergency plans for their homes, businesses, and communities.

“As our climate changes, being ‘weather-ready’ means more than just checking the forecast,” says Seth Spencer, an Extension Educator and the program’s instructor. “It means having a plan in place and the tools ready to protect our families and livelihoods. We are excited to bring these resources directly to the Cook County community.”
