The Grand Marais Fire Department (GMFD) is calling on community members to keep fire hydrants clear of snow and ice. In an emergency, minutes matter. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, a fire can double in size every minute. If a hydrant is buried, firefighters may have to spend time digging it out instead of tackling the fire.

To ensure crews can work quickly in an emergency, the GMFD asks residents to maintain a three-foot clear area around each hydrant and a clear path leading directly to the street. While the property owner where a hydrant is located is responsible for keeping it clear, help is requested in assisting neighbors who are away or unable to shovel.
