The Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is updating the firearm permit application process to improve efficiency and ensure that appropriate staff are available to assist you. Effective today, September 1, 2025, the CCSO will no longer accept walk-in applications for firearm permits. Additionally, the CCSO will extend firearm permit application hours on Wednesdays to better serve the public.
All applicants must schedule an appointment in advance by phone or email. At this time, appointments will be available Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with extended hours on Wednesdays until 6:00 p.m.
As a reminder, permit-to-purchase applications can be submitted via email, USPS, or in person. Per Minnesota statute, permit to carry applications must be submitted in person.
The CCSO appreciates the community’s cooperation and understanding as they implement this change.
