A rollercoaster of weather conditions this summer has many wondering what fall will bring. While local schools will welcome back students in the next couple of weeks, fall officially begins on the autumnal equinox, which is on September 22 at 1:19 p.m. in Cook County and Grand Portage.

Recently, NOAA and The Farmers' Almanac released predictions for the upcoming season. Here's what they forecast.

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center Outlook

According to an outlook from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, Minnesota is likely to experience above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall during the meteorological fall period of September, October, and November. The forecast hints at up to a 40% chance of above-average temperatures for northern Minnesota, with a slightly higher probability for the southern portion of the state. The precipitation outlook also leans toward drier-than-average conditions for the season.

The Farmers' Almanac Extended Forecast

The Farmers' Almanac extended fall forecast offers a different outlook for the nation. For the Midwest in September, predictions lean towards a mix of fair weather and stormy patterns. In October, early snow is possible. Additionally, regular storms and gusty winds are expected across most of the country. For an extended Halloween forecast, the Almanac predicts cold and precipitation, but the type of precipitation is unknown. By November, many areas will get their first shot at wintery conditions. The forecast specifies that the coldest conditions will be in the North Central states, which include Minnesota.
