Schroeder’s newest hangout, Short Stop Bar, has officially opened its doors — bringing beer, wine, and light bites to the West End of Cook County, along Minnesota’s North Shore.

The name is a nod to the building’s history as the Schroeder Short Stop gas station, a local landmark that later became an antique store and, most recently, a vintage clothing shop. Owners Emma, Tim, and Jake spent the past two years restoring the space to its original character, uncovering treasures like a hidden wall of windows during demolition. Throughout the process, they’ve kept it community-focused — hiring local tradespeople and working alongside friends and neighbors.

Short Stop Bar is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the West End of Cook County in Schroeder, MN.

Today, the hip and cozy spot serves four Ursa Minor Brewing beers on tap, North Shore Winery wines, and simple snacks like pizzas and pretzels, with hot dogs planned for the near future. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (closed Tuesdays), it shares its space with the couple’s bike rental business at Electric Trails (located at 7902 MN 61, Schroeder, MN 55613), which runs until 5 p.m. With a new wood-burning stove, the couple hopes to stay open into October.

The response from the community and tourists alike has been overwhelmingly positive. “There’s not a lot on the West End, so people are excited,” says Emma. Campers from nearby Lamb’s Resort have already made it a go-to stop for a cold beer after a day outdoors.

“It’s been a labor of love with this entire community,” Emma says — and now that love is being returned, one good-time at a time.
