If you have ever seen lots of holes in your trees that are in a vertical or horizontal line you are probably seeing holes made by the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Sapsuckers are a type of woodpecker that drill into trees to feed on the sap and the insects attracted to it. They are pretty common but you don’t see them often or at least I haven’t. I think they are a very beautiful woodpecker.

A friend found a sapsucker nest cavity on their property about a month ago so I spent a few days photographing it. Only the male was feeding the young. Something must have happened to the female after the baby’s hatched. Probably was taken by a hawk. He was one busy dad for a couple of weeks as there were at least three young in the nest. About every fifteen minutes he would come in with another load of insects and worms.
