From the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging - July 24, 2025

The Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging and Wilderness Health, along with local healthcare employers, will host an in-person, three-day residential SCRUBS Camp for regional high school students (entering grades 9 – 12) from July 29-31, 2025. The camp will be held at Minnesota North College - Hibbing Campus, and students will be coming from across the seven-county Arrowhead region (Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis Counties).

The SCRUBS Camp offers a unique opportunity for students to learn about various healthcare professions from providers through hands-on experiences. This year's educational sessions will include nursing, medical lab tech, behavioral health, surgical technologist, sonography/ultrasound, radiology, CNA, and care coordinator. In addition, students will visit UMD Medical School, UMD College of Pharmacy, RSI Equine Therapy Farm, and Lake Superior College, where they'll explore Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, Massage Therapy, and MLT/Phlebotomy programs.

New this year, students will complete Basic Life Support CPR and AED training, the Stop-the-Bleed program, and participate in a session on Preparing to Enter the Healthcare Sector, providing them with essential life-saving skills alongside career exploration. "We're excited to welcome 32 students to this year's SCRUBS Camp. Beyond exploring diverse healthcare careers, students will gain valuable life-saving skills through BLS CPR training and Stop-the-Bleed, skills that will serve them well both in potential healthcare careers and in their daily lives," said Michelle Hargrave, Director of Operations & Workforce Development at Wilderness Health.

SCRUBS Camps have been in existence since 2008 and were created by HealthForce Minnesota. The first SCRUBS Camp was held at Winona State University.

SCRUBS Camps provide students with a unique opportunity to learn about various professions, including the necessary schooling, the demand for those careers, and potential salary levels. For students, the camp is an excellent way to turn their dreams of a healthcare career into a reality.

This year's camp is open to 32 students and is currently fully enrolled, but there is a waitlist. Due to grant funding and generous partnerships, there is no cost to students. The camp is made possible through the generous support of Essentia Health, Family Services Collaborative of St. Louis County, Applied Learning Institute, Wilderness Health, JET, Aspirus Health, Fairview Health, and the True North Stars Perkins Consortium.
