Katie Schuler has been baking at home for years, but in early 2025 she began baking more consistently after gaining more time at home. What started as a way to fill her time and share extra baked goods with friends and family soon became a small-scale cottage bakery—The Crumby Rise.

Before officially offering baked goods for sale, Katie had many local taste testers, now customers, to narrow down the ones she felt best about selling. With a full-time job at a local resort that keeps her busy and on her feet, baking provides a welcome contrast and a way to unwind.

From her home kitchen in Lutsen, Katie bakes sandwich breads and English muffins for her husband, using a bread recipe passed down from her mother. Her weekly offerings vary, and she's always experimenting with something new through what she calls "Katie’s Test Kitchen."

Customers can count on three items each week, posted to her website—thecrumbyrise.com. Orders are open Friday through Monday, with pickup on Wednesdays from 4–6 p.m. at her home. Subscription options are available in 4-week increments, where customers receive whatever is baked fresh each week. Larger “will call” orders of 2–4 loaves can also be arranged depending on the recipe and availability.

The Crumby Rise operates under Minnesota’s cottage food law and sells directly to consumers. While she has baked gluten-free items by request, she notes that she can’t guarantee gluten-free safety and may offer those on a limited, special-order basis.

Popular items include focaccias and bagels, while her current personal favorite is an orange cinnamon roll. Looking ahead to the holidays, she plans to offer seasonal favorites like dinner rolls, stuffing mixes, rye breads, and pumpkin bread.
