A Boreal Community Media Exclusive - July 22, 2025

Nick and Stephanie are owners of North Shore Cubez in Schroeder.  They rent and sell new and used shipping containers.

How did you land in Cook County?  What journey brought you here?

I'm from mid-coast Maine; Stephanie is from the Iron Range.  We met in Maine and would come to Minnesota to visit her parents.  During those trips we both really enjoyed visiting the North Shore and decided to come live here.  The feel of the North Shore is so similar to Maine, with the added bonus of lots of public lands which are near nonexistent on the east coast.

Tell us a bit about your business.  It is exciting to know that shipping containers can be purchased or leased right here in Cook County!

When we purchased our land in Schroeder, we were living in our camper as we developed our property and built our small house.  We originally had an enclosed trailer that we dragged here from Maine and although it was 26 feet long it was not ideal for long term storage.  We finally realized we wouldn't be using the trailer for anything but storage and decided it would be much more cost effective to sell the trailer and get some containers.  Shopping for containers up here became a bit of a headache.  Over the next year we purchased a number of containers, at first buying from mega online companies. We quickly realized the experience dealing with big companies or people who don't even live in Minnesota was not the best customer experience.  We made the decision to start this business on the grounds of being able to offer a local, no-headache buying process with someone who lives locally and is familiar with the area and the challenges of making local deliveries.  Many customers are very happy to be able to come meet us and see containers that they can actually purchase without having to leave the North Shore.

What are some of the advantages of using a shipping container for storage?

There are a number of great advantages of a container versus building a storage shed.   The two biggest reasons that come to my mind are immediate storage and long term rodent resistance.  Building is a great option but it takes time, effort, and coordination.  A shipping container is instant.  Mice also seem to be my arch nemesis on the shore, with every vehicle and building I have they fight me, but they have yet to break into one of my storage containers.  Containers are also very low maintenance, they last many decades with zero maintenance.  They are built with corten steel which is a very corrosive resistant steel, so unlike your vehicle that seems to rust away to nothing after a few winters, any rust on a container takes an extremely long time to turn into anything more than superficial.  Containers are also very fire resistant.  One gentleman purchased a new twenty foot container this spring in Brimson and a week after taking delivery the fires ripped through his property and burnt many of his structures.  The container, along with all its contents, survived completely unscathed.  The photos he sent me are very impressive, there is a perfectly new looking container surrounded by a scorched black forest.

Starting a business can be a daunting experience for some.  What inspired you?  Do you have any words of wisdom for someone else thinking of starting their own business?

Ever since buying my first container I fell in love with them.  It may sound silly but I think they are the coolest things.  I think for anyone thinking of starting a business you have to enjoy what you do.  If you are going to sell a product, you need to actually like the product.  If you love what you do, you will spend time learning about the product, what it can do, how people use it, and from there you will be an expert in everything that relates to that product.  When you are a passionate expert in any field, you will succeed.  If you are just starting a business to get rich, with no emotional attachment to what your business does, you will at best struggle, and at worst fail.

What are some of your favorite "go-to" spots in the County when you need some rest and relaxation time?

This is a hard question; we have so many spots that we truly enjoy, but to name a favorite would be tough.  There are also so many spots that we haven't yet explored that we find ourselves exploring new places more often than we return to favorites.  I would say we truly enjoy twilight trips to Tofte Peak, paddleboarding the sea caves in Iilgen City, hiking to Caribou falls, evening gatherings at Father Baragas.

If someone wants to reach out to you to inquire about renting or purchasing a shipping container, what is the best way for them to reach you?

The absolute best way is to call.  There is so much information to relay about shipping containers (size, new vs used, colors, door options, delivery process, payment, scheduling a visit, timeline of delivery, regulations, etc) that email and text message conversations can get very lengthy and time consuming, where a 5-10 minute phone call can answer almost all questions in a very efficient manner.  Please give me a call (218) 220-0991.

Prices of shipping containers are a bit like fuel prices, they can move up and down quickly.  There is also the risk of tariffs quickly changing prices.  If you're interested in a container please reach out for a price delivered to your property.  I find that my prices are very competitive so please don't hesitate to give me a call.
