Our youngest granddaughter spent a couple of days with us this week so I took her out kayaking on a local lake. We rounded the corner of one of the bays and to our surprise we see a family of loons. Tova was pretty excited and so was I. They had two babies that looked like they were only a few days old. 

I have spent time with this particular pair of loons before and they are really tolerant of people being around them. They show no signs of stress when you use a telephoto lens to photograph them. I usually let them come to me and sometimes they fished right by the kayak.

They just went about their parental duties of keeping the babies fed. We watched as they brought in crawfish, minnows and water bugs. The babies were always eager for more. 

As the sun started to go down, we headed back to shore. I can’t think of a better way to end the day. Kayaking with your granddaughter while watching a family of loons and a picturesque sunset.
