The annual Cook County Take a Kid Fishing event will take place this weekend, Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Elbow Lake.

Attendees can enjoy activities, including family fishing opportunities and related activities. DNR fisheries staff will provide boat rides, opportunities for shore and dock fishing, and demonstrations of minnow traps. Lunch and bait will be provided. This free event offers an alternative timing compared to the statewide Take a Kid Fishing Weekend in June, as it typically takes advantage of better bug and weather conditions in the area.

A limited quantity of fishing poles and lifejackets will be available for use. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear and lifejackets if available. An adult must accompany children attending the event. Anyone 16 or older intending to fish is required to possess a valid fishing license. Youth 15 and under do not need a fishing license at any time.

Elbow Lake is located 9.5 miles north on the Gunflint Trail, with a left turn onto Elbow Lake Landing Road. For further information, contact 218-877-8559 or [email protected].
