The City of Grand Marais celebrated the grand opening of the newly constructed City Hall with a community open house on Thursday, May 29th. The open house featured local ice cream from Superior Creamery, beer and wine samples from the city liquor store, and a variety of snacks. The new building, located on the same footprint as the old one, has been completely redesigned to maximize space and improve efficiency. It houses city offices, permitting services, public utilities (water, sewer, and electric), larger council chambers, and an expanded liquor store.

The new City Hall includes public restrooms available during open hours, additional office and conference rooms available for community use (booked through Communications Director Patrick Knight), and space that will soon showcase artwork from local artists. “We’re excited for this fresh new space and to share it with the community,” said Administrative Assistant Alyssa Morinville.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, City Administrator Mike Roth expressed gratitude to everyone who helped make the project come to life, including city council members from 2014 to present, Mayor Tracy Benson, the design team at LHB, the construction team McGough, and the many contractors who completed the work in the timeframe it was finished. He also thanked the liquor store staff and public works employees, noting, “We’re glad to be home again… I hope to return the favor to anyone with this new space.”

The city broke ground on the project on Friday, April 12, 2024.
