How did you land in Cook County? What journey led you here?

My parents were already living up here, and I was going through a major life change. I moved to Cook County to recenter myself and heal, and it ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I fell in love with the lake, the landscape, and most of all—the community. My husband and I have made wonderful friends and feel lucky to live in a place where we can be active, connected, and surrounded by beauty every day.

Can you share with us a bit about the Grand Marais Slow Runners group that you started?

I’ve been running off and on since I was a teenager, and starting the Grand Marais Slow Runners group came from a desire to make running more accessible. I wanted to create a space where pace didn’t matter—where people could feel safe showing up exactly as they are. Running has helped me clear my head and process life, and I truly believe it’s something anyone can benefit from.

I’m also in the early stages of bringing parkrun to Grand Marais, which is an international, free weekly timed 5K. I’ll be speaking with folks at WTIP this month and hope to eventually tie that in with the Slow Runners group. It’s still in the beginning phases, but I’m really excited about it!

What hobbies do you enjoy when you are not busy working?

I’m a lifelong artist—I paint, draw, and also do digital illustration. I’m currently going to school for multimedia design and graphic illustration, so a lot of my time is spent creating. I’m also a non-traditional student returning to school later in life, which has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. Outside of art and school, I love hiking, being outdoors, and connecting with nature. I’m definitely a tree hugger at heart.

Is there a special spot in Cook County that you enjoy visiting for rest and relaxation?

There are so many beautiful spots, but I’d say Cascade Park is my favorite. The cedar trees there are just magical. I also love Artist’s Point and Pincushion Mountain, but there’s something about the woods at Cascade that always grounds me.

Will you tell us about your interest in harvesting mushrooms?

My husband and I used to grow and harvest mushrooms, and we even sold them at the Grand Marais Farmers Market. We’ve since shifted our focus—he’s now blowing glass, and I’m going to school and running my own business called Dream Builders Guild. Through it, I provide community support work, including child companionship and homemaking services. I also volunteer as an adult leader at the local LGBTQIA+ youth group, which has been incredibly meaningful. Being able to show up for others in the community is a big part of why I love living here.

Is there any advice that helped you overcome challenges in your life?

My Papa (grandfather) used to sing the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” and that simple reminder still sticks with me. I’ve always been a worrier, but hearing his voice in my head when things get tough helps me take a breath and keep going. He passed away from cancer in 2020, and that advice has only become more meaningful with time.

Also—just for fun—I’m currently training for two 10Ks and a 10-mile race this year. Running has become a powerful part of my growth, and I’m excited to see how far I can go, literally and figuratively!

I like to keep busy, and I truly love all the things I get to do—whether it’s creating art, learning something new, or helping others. I really love being of service to people in this community—it fills my heart and gives my life purpose.
