The pileated woodpeckers are becoming more active as spring approaches. I have seen several this week. The pileated is Minnesota’s largest woodpecker and one that I really enjoy photographing. It is about the size of a crow. I have seen them bring ant larvae to their young on several occasions but this is the first time I have seen them eating small crab apples. This photo was taken downtown Grand Marais. We haven’t had many waxwings this year so town is full of berries of all kinds. This is the male which has the red mustache and a full red crest.
