January 31 update: Due to the forecasted winter storm, this event has been postponed. Learn more here.

The Violence Prevention Center (VPC) is hosting another annual Beyond the Reel film fundraising event in Grand Marais on Saturday February 1st at 5:30pm. This fundraiser is a way for the Violence Prevention Center to engage with our community and supporters, share updates about the organization, and honor the work our community does to foster a safer and more equitable Cook County all while raising funds for local survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

The VPC is very happy to welcome former Cook County Attorney, Molly Hicken, to the event as one of our speakers. The VPC believes that Hicken’s experience navigating the criminal justice system in Cook County over 17 years will help bring the theme of the film to a local context. The film, Loud Enough - Surviving Justice, is a 60-minute documentary detailing the experience of one sexual assault survivor in her pursuit of justice after her local County Attorney refused to prosecute the perpetrator. The VPC knows that the themes and struggles experienced by the survivor in the film are not unique to her and resonate with the experience of many domestic abuse survivors’ experiences as well. The hope is that Hicken can share insight into what victims need and what community members can do to meet those needs.

Hicken’s address, the documentary, and the presentation of the Joan Drury Award will all be happening inside of the Arrowhead Center for the Arts theater following a one-hour social hour in the ACA lobby. The social hour, beginning at 5:30, will include a raffle with over 20 raffle prizes donated by local businesses and community members; an amazing array of food such as a sprawling charcuterie board, fruit and vegetable trays donated by Cook County Whole Foods Co-op, four appetizers donated by Cascade Lodge and Restaurant, dessert donated by Crosby Bakery, and an N/A mocktail donated by Poplar Haus; live guitar played by Ryan Leng; and other opportunities to engage with the VPC and our community of supporters.

Please join the VPC in community at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts Saturday, February 1st at 5:30pm for the social hour and film screening. Tickets are $25 and are available at the door only. Student rates are available.
