From the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging - January 21, 2025

For the 4th consecutive year, the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging (AAAA) is awarding Aging Impact Awards to honor businesses that excel in providing exceptional services or accommodations to enhance accessibility and experiences for people of all ages. This can be as simple as making accessibility improvements like as clear signage or keeping sidewalks shoved. Or training staff to engage respectfully with all customers—inclusive of those with hearing, vision, mobility, sensory, or other needs. Creating an Age-Friendly workplace by offering flexible schedules, ergonomic workspaces, and valuing older workers' experience is another way employers can adopt Age-Friendly best practices.

The AAAA is accepting nominations through February 14th to highlight the importance of adapting to meet the needs of all customers.  This prestigious recognition celebrates innovative efforts such as inclusive design, personalized services, exemplary customer service and community programs aimed at improving our lives as we age. By fostering a more inclusive environment, these businesses set a benchmark for others to follow, promoting independence and dignity for everyone as we age.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Business or organization must be located in or serve in the 7 county Arrowhead region.
  • Demonstrate positive impacts for older adults by providing an innovative service, adapting or improving physical space, implementing Age-Friendly hiring or employee retention practices, or employee training on how to serve older adults.
  • Organizations who receive funding from the AAAA are not eligible.

The Case for Age-Friendly Businesses

People 65 and older are the fastest growing demographic in the U.S. and major contributors to our economy, with disposable income and loyalty that businesses can tap into. Did you know:

  • Minnesotans 50+ make up 36% of the population yet contribute 40% of the State’s GDP.   Nationally, people aged 55 and older control over 70% of disposable income and are responsible for more than 50% of consumer spending.
  • A 2019 AARP study highlighted that businesses often under-target older adults despite their economic importance. For example, only about 10% of marketing budgets were focused on this demographic, even though they make up a large part of the consumer base.

You can nominate today! Nominations will be open through February 14th, and nominees will be notified of the results in early March. To complete a short, simple nomination form, visit arrowheadaging.org, email [email protected], or call 218-529-7525.
