On Saturday, December 28, the Cook County Highway Department issued a travel advisory for the area as road conditions continue to deteriorate. According to a release, county operators are out using motor graders to try and improve road conditions where possible. As gravel roads soften with the warm temperatures and wet conditions, the county is attempting to keep heavy plow trucks off those roads, with limited salt and sand application. The Cook County Highway Department asks that residents and visitors consider changing plans and staying home if possible. While gravel and other side roads have been reported to be soft (gravel) and icy, MnDOT is showing damp or normal road conditions along Highway 61, however, that could change as temperatures drop overnight. Visit 511mn.org for the most up-to-date information on Highway 61.

Snow and rain have fallen in the area over the past 48 hours, with amounts ranging from .22 inches to .66 inches, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth. That precipitation and temperatures above freezing have caused icy road conditions throughout the county. Temperatures are expected to continue to drop below freezing as the evening goes on.
