December 3-5 Winter Storm Snowfall Totals and Max Wind Gusts

The winter storm that rolled through Cook County and Grand Portage earlier this week brought several inches of white, fluffy snow, wind, and cold temperatures. 

Here are the snow totals for Cook County as of the morning of December 4 from the National Weather Service Duluth:

  • Grand Marais 3.8 NNE: 6.5"
  • Hovland 6 W: 6.0"
  • Grand Marais 4.4 W: 5.7"         
  • Grand Marais 3 ENE: 5.5"
  • Grand Marais 2.0 E: 5.5"
  • Grand Marais 6.2 WSW: 5.2"
  • Hovland 2.8 WNW: 4.8"
  • Hovland 0.1 NE: 4.2"
  • Grand Marais 30.5 NW: 4.0"
  • Tofte 4.9 NE: 3.8"
  • Grand Marais 4.4 WSW: 3.8"
  • Lutsen 11.8 N: 3.3"
  • 3 E Sea Gull Lake: 2.7"
  • Tofte 0.8 WSW: 2.5"

The wind has also been prevalent as a cold front moved in, causing windchill temperatures to drop below zero. 

Here are the highest wind gust reports from the National Weather Service Duluth between Wednesday, December 4, and the early morning of December 5: 

  • Grand Marais: 61 MPH
  • Grand Portage - Mp:  48 MPH
  • Grand Marais Mp 110.8: 45 MPH
  • Grand Marais Airport: 44 MPH
  • Schroeder - Mp 79: 43 MPH
  • Schroeder: 38 MPH

Winds are predicted to decrease into the afternoon on December 5. 

The snow is a welcomed sight for many hoping to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, or snowmobile. Lutsen Mountains announced it would be opening for the season on December 6. Pincushion Ski and Run Club (which manages the Pincushion Ski Trails) announced that the trails had officially been groomed for skate and classic cross-country skiing.
