From Boreal Community Media - November 25, 2024
Welcome to the 2024 Boreal Community Media virtual non-profit highlight! In the past, Boreal Community Media hosted an event called Dessert to the Max to celebrate and recognize local non-profits and their incredible work for the community. The event typically coincided with the Minnesota-based celebration Give to the Max, hosted by GiveMN, an annual celebration and “giving holiday” to all non-profits across the state.
This year, instead of an in-person celebration, Boreal is virtually honoring and highlighting these organizations on Boreal.org.
The non-profit organization we’re highlighting today is:
Organization Name
Gunflint Trail Historical Society
Mission/Work
Founded in 2005, the Gunflint Trail Historical Society is a vibrant community focused on preserving the stories of the Gunflint Trail. At Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, cultural and natural history are interwoven. The Gunflint Trail Historical Society builds community by connecting people to the Gunflint Trail region, sharing its natural and cultural history.
The purpose of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society is to preserve the cultural history of the Gunflint Trail, to acknowledge the significance of the natural environment and its influence on Indigenous people to recent inhabitants, and to provide opportunities for exploration and education at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center.
A fun fact about Gunflint Trail Historical Society
The GTHS operates the Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center which is housed in the old Chik-Wauk Lodge, built in 1934 by the Nunstedt family.
