Snow has officially arrived, and the City of Grand Marais calendar and winter parking ordinances are in effect.

According to the city municipal code, alternate-side parking began on November 15th. On odd-numbered calendar days, parking is permitted on the odd-numbered address side of the street, and on even-numbered calendar days, parking is permitted on the even-numbered address side.
Parking is prohibited on both sides of 5th Avenue West between Highway 61 and 1st Street.

In addition, the city municipal code states that parking is prohibited along the following areas between the times of 2:00 am and 7:00 am:
  • Along Highway 61
  • Broadway Avenue, south of Highway 61
  • First Avenue West, south of Highway 61
  • Second Avenue West, south of Highway 61
  • Wisconsin Street, east of Highway 61
  • First Street, east of Highway 61
  • First Avenue East, south of Highway 61

These parking restrictions are in place to allow plows to clear snow more efficiently and are valid on the city's streets and highways. However, a period from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. each day is in place to provide an opportunity for people to move their vehicles to an approved location. During this time, the calendar and winter parking ordinances will not be enforced. Outside of that time (12:01 a.m. to 4:59 p.m.), any vehicle not compliant may be towed.

Calendar and winter parking ordinances are in effect through April 15; however, the city may issue a snow emergency after that date, when parking restrictions will once again be in place.
