From Boreal Community Media - November 24, 2024
Welcome to the 2024 Boreal Community Media virtual non-profit highlight! In the past, Boreal Community Media hosted an event called Dessert to the Max to celebrate and recognize local non-profits and their incredible work for the community. The event typically coincided with the Minnesota-based celebration Give to the Max, hosted by GiveMN, an annual celebration and “giving holiday” to all non-profits across the state.
This year, instead of an in-person celebration, Boreal is virtually honoring and highlighting these organizations on Boreal.org.
The non-profit organization we’re highlighting today is:
Organization Name
First & Second Thrift Store
Mission/Work
The purpose of this corporation is: - to decrease the amount of clothing and household items going into the landfill
- to offer a source of affordable clothing and household needs to the community
- to offer community members a place to volunteer their time while supporting their favorite local nonprofits
- to support local nonprofit organizations with the money raised by the sale of donated goods.
Upcoming events
We’ll have a 20% off sale for Black Friday (and Saturday), and we’ll be open until 7:00 on December 6th and 7th for the Harbor Holiday Weekend.
A fun fact about First and Second Thrift Store
Since we opened in 2007, we’ve donated more than a million dollars to non-profit organizations in the area. Our volunteers get to choose the organizations that receive their “earnings”.
How someone can donate
We accept donations during our open hours on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. We ask that people donate clothing and household items that are of like-new quality. We’re both picky and proud about our inventory. Donations should be brought to our alley entrance behind Joynes Department Store.
We’re located across from The Big Lake on First Avenue downtown.

If you’d like to volunteer at the thrift store, contact Ann Marie Mershon ([email protected]) or fill out a volunteer application at the store.
