From Boreal Community Media - November 23, 2024
Welcome to the 2024 Boreal Community Media virtual non-profit highlight! In the past, Boreal Community Media hosted an event called Dessert to the Max to celebrate and recognize local non-profits and their incredible work for the community. The event typically coincided with the Minnesota-based celebration Give to the Max, hosted by GiveMN, an annual celebration and “giving holiday” to all non-profits across the state.
This year, instead of an in-person celebration, Boreal is virtually honoring and highlighting these organizations on Boreal.org.
The non-profit organization we’re highlighting today is:
Organization Name
North House Folk School
Mission/Work
The mission of North House Folk School is to enrich lives and build community by teaching traditional northern crafts in a student-centered learning environment that inspires the hands, the heart and the mind.
Upcoming events
Winterers’ Gathering & Arctic Film Festival is November 22-24 on campus. This cozy annual event celebrates the crafts, customs, history, and stories that have been inspired by winter. Featuring winter-centric coursework, a winter tent camp, gear sale, film festival, speakers, contra dance, and more, this is a classic event to welcome the start of the chilliest season. We’re excited to welcome special guest instructor Niilá Omma, a duojár (or traditional Sámi craftsman), from Skellefteå, Sweden. Our School Store in the new Welcome Center building is a great place to begin browsing for holiday gifts! Discover a wide selection of craft by local artisans, clothing, books, tools, class tuition gift certificates, and much more. North House is also the only place in the United States to find some unique books and tools, including Kalthoff Axes, Lost Art Press books, and more!
Treat yourself to the gift of learning by registering for a class—local residents receive a 25% tuition discount!
A fun fact about North House Folk School
More than 50 former timber framing students returned to North House as volunteers to cut the 270 timbers for the Welcome Center timber frame with instructors Peter Henrikson and Tom Healy. Hedstrom Lumber Company milled each timber for the project! The work of hundreds of artisans is reflected in the Welcome Center and in the new school store!
