Voters in the Cook County Schools District approved Question One of the district’s three-question referendum during Tuesday’s general election. Questions Two and Three were rejected.
As of Wednesday morning, reported vote totals were 1,904 in favor and 1,649 against for Question One, 1,677 in favor and 1,847 against for Question Two, and 1,504 in favor and 1,993 against for Question Three.
By approving Question One, voters authorized a $24.18 million investment to enhance the district’s PreK-12 building. The funding will update classrooms, add common/flex spaces, add an auxiliary gym, improve accessibility and building security, and complete deferred maintenance.
“We’re grateful to our community for making their voices heard and voting to strengthen learning spaces for our students,” said Superintendent Chris Lindholm. “Even though Questions Two and Three were rejected, this approval allows us to move forward with critical enhancements that will benefit our entire district.”
Question Two sought $9.16 million for improvements to the school’s grounds, including outdoor learning spaces, artificial turf for football and softball with a track, and updated theater equipment and seating. Question Three proposed a $3.45 million allocation for an additional gymnasium station.
“This is a significant step forward for our schools and our community,” said School Board Chair Dan Shirley. “We’re excited to see the improvements come to life and look forward to the positive impacts they will have for our students.”
Staff and community members will be invited to input on the design and implementation of approved projects. More information about the design process will be shared in the coming months. For more information about the approved projects, visit VikingsVision.org.
