Welcome to the 2024 Boreal Community Media virtual non-profit highlight! In the past, Boreal Community Media hosted an event called Dessert to the Max to celebrate and recognize local non-profits and their incredible work for the community. The event typically coincided with the Minnesota-based celebration Give to the Max, hosted by GiveMN, an annual celebration and “giving holiday” to all non-profits across the state.
This year, instead of an in-person celebration, Boreal is virtually honoring and highlighting these organizations on Boreal.org.
Today’s non-profit organization we’re highlighting is:

To inspire the preservation and restoration of the North Shore’s unique environment through education and exemplary stewardship, especially at Sugarloaf Cove.Sugarloaf: The North Shore Stewardship Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior. We operate Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center near Schroeder, Minnesota, and we offer forest stewardship learning opportunities for residents—seasonal and year-round—and visitors of the North Shore. Our 30-acre property surrounds the 10.3-acre Sugarloaf Point Scientific and Natural Area.
Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center, located on Highway 61, 73 miles northeast of Duluth and 4 miles southwest of Schroeder, is the natural place to escape the crowds and relax. The Cove is renowned for its 1.1 billion-year-old lava flows and its beautiful cobblestone beach. The Center offers a breadth of nature-oriented activities and learning opportunities for families and individuals, including:
- Guided Nature Walks and Programs
- Self-guided one-mile Nature Trail
- Unique Geologic Formations
- Historic Logging Operation Artifacts
- Interpretive Center with exhibits
We are a founding member of the North Shore Forest Collaborative and are currently managing the Woods Walk program for landowners on the North Shore. Through this program, landowners can receive a free walk in their woods with a trained advisor who will give them recommendations on how to restore their forest.
